Learn Spades, one hand at a time.

Our guided tutorial walks you through the decisions, with practice cards and feedback.

  1. 01

    Find your partner

Four players form two teams. Your partner sits opposite you, and you share a score.

  2. 02

    Draw, then bid

Choose a face-down card to decide the first dealer. After the deal, bid how many tricks you expect to take.

  3. 03

    Follow suit

Play the suit that was led when you have it. If you’re out of that suit, you can play another—including a spade.

  4. 04

    Make your books

Spades are trump. Win enough tricks to make your team’s bid, manage your bags, and reach the target score.

How do scoring, bags, and nil work?

Make your combined bid to earn 10 points per bid trick, plus 1 point for each extra trick (a bag). Miss it and lose 10 points per bid trick. Every 10 bags costs 100 points. Nil means winning no tricks: a successful nil earns 100 points; a failed nil loses 100.

Which house rules can I choose?

Practice defaults to 250 points; live rooms and showdowns default to 500. Choose a target from 100–1000. Optional jokers replace the 2 of hearts and diamonds. You can also choose “first hand bids itself,” which scores 10 points per trick without bids, nil, or bags on that hand. Spades must be broken before they can be led, unless your entire hand is trump.

What happens if my turn times out?

After 30 seconds, the game plays your lowest legal card in the led suit. If you’re out of that suit, it plays your lowest non-trump card, or lowest trump when that’s all you have.
